The method makes it possible to produce ice sheets, more particularly for model tests with ships and marine structures, which possess a texture which corresponds at least approximately to that of ice sheets in nature and whose deformational and failure behaviour supply a very largely true-to-scale reproduction of what is observed in ice sheet in nature and consists in that the ice sheet is produced in that the columnar growth of the ice is disrupted by the introduction of fine-grain ice growth nuclei into the water body in such a way that a fine-granular ice is obtained over the entire ice sheet area or in one or several layers (Fig.1).
