The invention provides a method for the rapid assessment of the degree of halitosis comprising the steps of: a) obtaining a sample of fluid and/or tissue from the oral cavity of a subject, b) assessing the amount of .beta.- galactosidase present in said sample, c) determining the degree of halitosis in said subject, by comparing the result obtained in step b) with appropriate reference values.
