Abstract A laser echo ranging device (lidar) is used both to measure cloud height and to measure slant range visibility. The distance for which the echo falls to the noise level is measured by a counter, and the echo voltage for a distance selected by a time switch for example for chosen distances in 100 meter steps is also stored. These values are measured for various angles of elevation and can be used to compute the slant visual range. Reference to the data for the different angles of elevation yields the layer structure of inhomogeneous scatter- ing characteristics of the atmosphere.
