ABSTRACT This invention relates to the treatment of living plant cells by altering their interaction with charged species in their environment. In particular, the invention relates to a controlled modification of plant-cell growth behavior by the application of encoded electrical information. More particularly, the invention provides for the intra-cellular applica- tion, via non-contacting direct inductive coupling, of one or more electri- cal voltage and concommitant current signals conforming to a highly specific pattern. An electromagnetic treatment device developed for this technique comprises a magnetic circuit including two axially spaced electrical coils connected for excitation in flux-aiding relation and a retainer adapted to fixedly hold said coils at a spacing to thereby define a treatment zone between the coils, whereby upon excitation the coils establish a flux- development axis through the zone. A non-paramagnetic device is adapted to support living plant cells and to provide a moist environment of such supported cells within the treatment zone. An electric circuit excites the magnetic circuit with a repetitive low-voltage signal cycle designed for such electromagnetic coupling to the plant cells as to induce a specific non-linear electrochemical cell response.
