ABSTRACT A method of grinding the outer contour of cams and the like in which the cam is rough-ground by a roughing wheel having a radial circumferential arrangement of one or more grooves on its outer circumference so that the roughing wheel following a grinding cut is displaced in axial direction and rough-grinding is continued following radial infeed until the finished rough dimension is attained and in which the cam is then finish-ground by a finishing wheel. The apparatus suitable for implementing this method feature at least one radial circumferential groove on the outer circumference of the roughing wheel, a roughing wheel width that is greater than the axial dimension of the cam and a separate finishing wheel for finish-grinding.
