ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a method of melting down a column of scrap iron, iron sponge, pellets or the like in a vertical shaft furnace wherein a flame is applied to the bottom of said column by one or more burners and wherein fuel and oxygen are fed to the or each burner through the walls of the furnace, the oxygen being fed through a pipe disposed within a fuel feeding pipe and the charge column being supported around the periphery of its base by secretions of solidified charge material which grow on said walls around the burner or burners.
