ABSTRACT By charging of electrothermic smelting furnaces the charge is fed batchwise to the furnace pot through annular charging units arranged more or less concentrically around each electrode 3. The charge is supplied to an annular charging unit which surrounds each electrode and consists of a rota- table chamber (18) which comprises at least one bottom member (16) and two substantially vertical side walls (14,15). The bottom and the walls are rotated for supply of charge to the chamber (18) whereupon the bottom of the chamber is rotated separately whereby the charge contained between the walls (14,15) of the chamber is allowed to fall into the furnace pot through at least one lockable opening (21) in said bottom.
