A method and optical system are provided which lessen spherical aberration normally associated with coupling small-diameter core optical fiber with a collimating lens. By coupling and optically aligned ends of thermally expanded core (TEC) fiber having a small output angular divergence to a GRIN lens, spherical aberration issignificantly reduced.

Méthode et système optique réduisant l'aberration sphérique normalement associée au couplage d'une fibre optique à coeur de petit diamètre avec une lentille collimatrice. En couplant et en alignant optiquement les extrémités d'une fibre à coeur thermiquement dilaté, ayant un petit angle de divergence de sortie, à une lentille à gradient d'indice, on réduit de manière significative l'aberration sphérique.
