ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a method and device for checking the validity of credit cards (1) in combination with a printing device (4) whereby the information on the card is read magnetically or optically by a reading unit (3). By permitting the card (1) to pass through a card channel (6) set in a work area (15), the lengthwise edges of which are provided with tracks tracks (7, 8) for holding and guiding the credit card, and in the bottom of which are placed reading heads (9, 13, 14), the data on the card is read and fed into a microcomputer. The microcomputer thereby compares the data entered with the data in its memory bank, and thereafter either permits the card to continue foreward to the printing position chosen by the computer, based on which type of card was read as well as the appearance of the corresponding sales slip, or seizes it if the indication is given that the transaction is not allowed to proceed, and with the reason given on a display panel (17). The positioning of the card is done using an electromagnetically driven blocking device (11) hidden from view in one of the tracks (7, 8).
