ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a method for producing gas containing mainly CO and H2, wherein carbon-carriers and gasification agents are introduced, as reactants, into a reactor with a bath of molten metal and/or slag, it is proposed that the reactants be brought into contact, in the stream of gas or of particles, with the bath, in such a manner that the level thereof rises from a lower level obtaining in the condition of rest prior to the gasification process, as a result of an increase in volume, to an upper level obtained during the gasification pro- cess, and that at least one of the reactants is introduced at a level between the said upper and lower bath levels. A re- actor, provided for the purpose, is of a configuration such that the mouth of the nozzle, or group of nozzles, for at least one of the reactants, opens, at a height between a lower and an upper bath level, into the reactor, the said lower bath level being that prior to the gasification process while the upper bath level is that obtained during the gasification process.
