The invention concerns a method and a regenerator for transferring heat from one flow to another. The method is based on recirculating a granular heat transfer material between the circulating fluidized bed reactors of the regenerator configuration (comprising only two circulating fluidized bed reactors (A) and (B) in the basic configuration), whereby a tendency toward temperature equalization of the flows participating in the heat transfer process by entering the different circulating fluidized bed reactors is attained. The equalization of the temperatures is controlled by adjusting the particle flows between the reactors. The mixing of the flows is prevented by directing the particles separated in cyclone chamber (5) of circulating fluidized bed reactor (A) primarily into channel (10), where the particles form a fixed bed layer. From the bottom part of the channel section (10), a particle flow of desired volume rate is controlled to move from circulating fluidized bed reactor (A) to the other circulating fluidized bed reactor (B). When the channel section (10) becomes full, the remaining portion of the particles separated in the cyclone (5) fall back into the circulating fluidized bed reactor (A). The situation and operation of reactor (B) is fully analogous.
