Enriching combustion air with oxygen when refuse is burned is a known procedure. Even low-level enrichment causes a considerable rise in temperature in the combustion chamber. In order to limit that rise in temperature, it has been the practice to spray wet sludge into the combustion chamber as an extinguishing agent. This makes it possible to enrich the air to any desired degree, but requires a very large quantity of oxygen, thus considerably increasing operating costs. According to the present invention, the additional oxygen-enriched air is blown from air boxes (7) into the refuse layer, independently of the primary air, only within narrow zones extending transversely, in a roller grill hearth (1) within the confines of the roller gussets between any two adjacent rollers (5). In this way, an intense fire is fanned and ignites the overlying refuse (8). The combustion efficiency is hereby considerably improved at little cost and without any unwanted rise in temperature.

Lors de l'incinération d'ordures ménagères, l'air de combustion est enrichi avec de l'oxygène. Un faible enrichissement entraîne déjà une montée en température importante dans le foyer. Pour atténuer cette montée en température, on injecte dans le foyer de la boue humide comme liquide d'extinction. Cette technique permet certes de réguler comme on veut l'apport en oxygène. Le besoin en oxygène reste néanmoins très important, ce qui se traduit par un accroissement des coûts d'exploitation. La technique proposée consiste à insuffler dans la couche de déchets de l'air additionnel enrichi à l'oxygène, indépendamment de l'air primaire provenant de caisses à air (7), uniquement dans le secteur des zones étroites transversales. En cas de combustion avec grille à rouleaux (1), l'air est insufflé dans la zone des goussets entre deux rouleaux (5) adjacents. Ainsi obtient-on dans les zones étroites un feu intense qui sert d'amorce pour l'allumage des déchets susjacents (8). Il en résulte une combustion nettement améliorée, sans montée en température indésirable et pour un faible coût.
