The present invention utilizes the marriage of photocatalytic degradation and electrochemical oxidation to provide wastewater remediation and water purification based on the use of bifunctional electrodes. The bifunctional electrode provides for combined photocatalytic and electrochemical wastewater remediation for removing any one or combination of organic chemical pollutants, inorganic chemical pollutants and microorganisms. The electrode includes an electronically conducting substrate having a photocatalyst applied to a portion of the surface, the photocatalyst having a bandgap energy (E9), and an electrocatalyst applied to another portion of the surface. Under illumination the photocatalyst produces electron-hole pairs which are separated by an anodic bias potential applied across the photocatalyst. The same bias is applied across the electrocatalyst. The application of the anodic potential bias not only greatly enhances the performance of the photocatalyst for photooxidation of pollutants at the photocatalyst, but also effectively drives electrochemical oxidation of pollutants at the electrocatalyst surface.
La présente invention utilise l'association d'une décomposition photocatalytique et d'une oxydation électrochimique pour permettre la réhabilitation d'eau résiduaire et la purification d'eau sur la base de l'utilisation d'électrodes bifonctionnelles. L'électrode bifonctionnelle permet la réhabilitation photocatalytique et électrochimique combinée d'eau résiduaire pour enlever un quelconque polluant parmi les polluants chimiques organiques, les polluants chimiques inorganiques et les microorganismes ou une association de ceux-ci. L'électrode comprend un substrat conducteur d'électrons ayant un photocatalyseur appliqué sur une partie de la surface, le photocatalyseur ayant une énergie de bande interdite (E9), et un électrocatalyseur appliqué sur une autre partie de la surface. Sous l'effet d'un éclairement lumineux, le photocatalyseur produit des paires électron-trou qui sont séparées par une différence de potentiel anodique appliquée au photocatalyseur. La même différence est appliquée à l'électrocatalyseur. L'application de la différence de potentiel anodique non seulement augmente fortement la performance du photocatalyseur pour la photooxydation de polluants au niveau du photocatalyseur, mais entraîne également de façon efficace l'oxydation électrochimique de polluants à la surface de l'électrocatalyseur.
