ABSTRACT A data visualization system comprises data landscapes including a series of signs, which relate data to one or more visual attributes, and which are grouped within cells in the landscape. The user may navigate about the landscape to identify particular cells of interest and may conduct interactive animated filtering of data to observe the effect of changing one or more parameters of the data. A set of tools is provided to allow the user to construct landscapes and assign various visual attributes to diverse types of data.
