This invention relates to a control unit (26) which detects the presence of one or more gases produced by the heating/air conditioning unit (20) and disables the heating/air conditioning unit (20) if gases are present in undesired concentration. In one embodiment of the present invention, the presence of multiple gases are detected and a separate indication for each gas is provided. An alternate; of the present invention provides means for resetting the heating/air unit conditioning (20) a selected number of times after the heating/air conditioning unit (20) has been disabled due to the presence of a gas in undesired levels. An alternative embodiment of the present invention provides means for disabling the central heating/air conditioning unit (20) based upon the activation of one or more smoke alarms (182). Further, the present invention provides means for detecting inefficient combustion or other inefficient operation of the heating or heating/air conditioning unit (20) and indicating said inefficient operation to the user.
