A system for controlling feedgas heat provided to an exhaust aftertreatment device of an internal combustion engine includes a controller for determining not only a heat dependent operating condition of an aftertreatment device, but also the heat content of the engine feedgas. An electrical generation machine driven by the engine is loaded with a variable electrical load bank controlled by a controller such that the magnitude of the electrical load imposed on the electrical machine by the load bank is dependent upon a determined operating condition of the aftertreatment device.
