The present invention relates to the usage pattern, commonly found in many software applications, of defining sets of objects based on object attributes. A specifically designed set-definition language for defining sets, called SDL, is described and a software system that implements this language efficiently on top of a standard relational database management system (RDMS) is presented. The unique features of the SDL language are the implicit constraints that are enforced on the relational data that belong to the objects. Unique to the SDL system is also the logical metadata of dimensions that enables the SLD system to enforce these constraints across relations. The SDL system utilizes several optimization techniques to enable efficient implementation on top of RDMS. Query composition tools are also described and facilitate the creation of SDL expressions.

Cette invention a trait à un profil d'utilisation, rencontré communément dans de nombreuses applications logicielles, relatif à la définition d'ensembles d'objets fondés sur des attributs d'objet. Elle concerne un langage de définition d'ensemble (SDL), spécialement conçu, permettant de définir des ensembles ainsi qu'un logiciel mettant ce langage en application, de manière satisfaisante, au sommet d'un système classique de gestion de base de données relationnelles (SGBDR). Les seules particularités de ce langage SDL résident dans les contraintes implicites imposées aux données relationnelles relevant des objets. Sont également uniques à ce système SDL, les métadonnées logiques dont les dimensions permettent à ce système d'imposer ces contraintes en matière de relations. Le système SDL fait intervenir plusieurs techniques d'optimisation pour permettre une mise en application satisfaisante au sommet d'un SGBDR. L'invention porte, de plus, sur des outils de composition de requêtes facilitant la création d'expressions de SDL.
