In a large-scale video-on-demand (VOD) system, the scalability and the provision of truly interactive functions are two difficult problems which have not been resolved satisfactorily. It is easy to provide fully interactive functions using unicast streams but these systems are limited in their scalability which affect the cost of service provisioning. Batching systems based on multicast streaming, on the other hand, can increase the scalability but it is difficult to provide interactive functions on these systems. This invention provides a media delivery system having a novel architecture aiming at serving millions of users in a metropolitan area. It features hybrid multicast-unicast streaming to achieve both scalability and full interactivity through the provision of distributed interactive servers, which cached the multicast media streams generated by the media servers. The interactive servers may also provide fault tolerant routing and error recovery.
Selon l'invention, l'adaptabilité et la disponibilité de fonctions vraiment interactives sont deux problèmes difficiles non encore résolus de manière satisfaisante dans un système de vidéo sur demande à grande échelle. Il est facile de fournir des fonctions complètement interactives en utilisant des flux monodestination mais l'adaptabilité de ces systèmes est limitée ce qui affecte leur coût de fourniture de service. Par contre, il est possible d'augmenter l'adaptabilité des systèmes par lots, sur la base de flux multidestinations, mais il reste difficile de mettre en oeuvre des fonctions interactives dans ces systèmes. L'invention concerne donc un système de distribution de médias possédant une nouvelle architecture permettant de servir des millions d'utilisateurs dans une zone métropolitaine. Il est caractérisé par un flux hybride mono-multidestinations permettant l'adaptabilité et une interactivité complète obtenues au moyen de serveurs interactifs distribués, avec mise en antémémoire des flux de médias multidestinations produits par les serveurs de médias. Les serveurs interactifs permettent aussi de mettre en oeuvre un acheminement à tolérance de panne et une reprise sur incident.
