The disclosure describes a novel Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) method and system for determining the position of a first mobile radio terminal within an associated mobile radio system, which is based on Time of Arrival (TOA) measurements, including a plurality of radio base stations, measuring devices, network controller, and service node. The measuring devices are synchronized in otherwise unsynchronized radio base stations. The measuring devices measure TOA on demand and (optionally) Direction of Arrival (DOA), on a digital uplink time slot or on digital information on an analog uplink traffic channel in one or more radio base stations. The TOA and DOA information and the traffic channel number are reported to a Mobile Services Switching Center, which obtains the first mobile terminal's identity from the traffic channel number and sends the terminal identity and TOA and DOA measurement information to a Service Node. The Service Node calculates the position of the first mobile radio terminal using the TOA information (supplemented by the DOA information when available). A second mobile radio terminal is colocated on a mobile platform (auto, emergency vehicle, etc.) with one of the radio base stations, which can be moved into relatively close proximity with the first mobile radio terminal. Consequently, by moving one of the radio base stations close to the region of interest (near the first mobile radio terminal), the position determination accuracy is significantly improved.

La présente invention concerne un procédé (500) et un système (100, 600, 700) fonctionnant selon un principe de différentiels d'heure d'arrivée ou "TDOA" (Time Difference Of Arrival) et permettant d'évaluer la position d'un premier terminal du service radio mobile (108) intégré à un système radio mobile (100, 600, 700). Ce système, qui fonctionne à base de mesures d'heures d'arrivée ou "TOA" (Time Of Arrival), comporte notamment une pluralité de stations de base radio (BS1, BS2, BS3), des appareils de mesure (130), un contrôleur de réseau (110) et un noeud de service (103). Les appareils de mesure (130) mesurent la TOA à la demande et éventuellement le sens d'arrivée ou "DOA" (Direction of Arrival), et ce, à l'occasion d'un créneau temporel amont numérique (301 et 302), ou d'une information numérique concernant un canal trafic amont analogique d'une ou plusieurs stations de base radio (BS1, BS2 et BS3). Les données TOA et DOA ainsi que le N DEG de canal trafic sont signalés à un centre de commutation des services mobiles (102), lequel centre extrait du N DEG de canal trafic l'identité du premier terminal mobile (108) et envoie à un noeud de service (103) l'identité du terminal et les informations de mesures TOA et DOA. Le noeud de service (103) calcule la position du premier terminal radio mobile (108) en utilisant l'information TOA (complétée le cas échéant de l'information DOA). Un deuxième terminal radio mobile (601) est également situé sur la même plate-forme mobile (automobile, véhicule de secours, etc...) que l'une des stations de base radio (BS1, BS2 ou BS3), laquelle plate-forme peut être amenée très près du premier terminal mobile (108). Il en résulte qu'en amenant l'une des stations de base radio (BS1, BS2 ou BS3) près de la région étudiée (près du premier terminal mobile (108)), on améliore de façon notable la précision de détermination de la position.
