The diagnostic method and system can be used to differentiate a bacterial from a non-bacterial infection. The diagnostic method and system measure the concentration of at least one cytokine present in the body tissue specimen of a patient. Bacterial infectious conditions are evidenced if the concentration of the cytokine is found to be over a threshold concentration indicative of bacterial infectious conditions.
