A method of identifying the location of a lesion in an image and evaluating whether the identified lesion is more likely to be cancerous, benign or uncertain is provided where the image includes a plurality of pixels, each pixel having a particular intensity I in the range of 0 <I <2N, where N is an integer > 1. The method includes defining one or more landmark pixels within the lesion; in the, growing a cluster around the landmark pixel(s) which contains the lesion for each intensity value in a set of possible intensity values; and at each of the intensity levels in the set, constructing a region of interest such that the region of interest is a minimal polygon containing the cluster at that intensity level. The method further includes computing a value of a characteristic of the minimal polygon at each intensity level, determining a number that is characteristic of changes in the area or volume of the regions of interest changes over the range of intensity level in the set, and determining whether the lesion is more likely to be cancerous, benign or uncertain in response to the number that is characteristic to the changes in the area or volume of the regions of interest changes, or based on threshold values and locations of pixels depicting a plurality of lesions within the body region.
L'invention porte sur un procédé d'identification de l'emplacement d'une lésion dans une image et d'évaluation afin de déterminer si la lésion est cancéreuse, bénigne ou incertaine. L'image comprend une pluralité de pixels, chaque pixel présentant une intensité I particulière comprise entre 0 <I <2<SP>N</SP>, N étant un chiffre entier > 1. Ce procédé consiste à définir un ou plusieurs pixels caractéristiques dans la lésion, à développer un groupe autour des pixels caractéristiques contenant la lésion pour chaque valeur d'intensité dans un ensemble de valeurs d'intensité possibles ; et pour chaque niveau d'intensité de l'ensemble, à construire une zone d'intérêt de manière que cette zone d'intérêt soit un polygone minimal contenant le groupe à ce niveau d'intensité. Ce procédé consiste aussi à calculer une valeur d'une caractéristique du polygone minimal à chaque niveau d'intensité, à déterminer un nombre caractéristique des changements dans la zone ou des changements du volume des zones d'intérêt sur la gamme du niveau d'intensité dans l'ensemble, et à déterminer si la lésion est cancéreuse, bénigne ou incertaine en réponse au nombre caractérisant les changements de la zone ou les changements du volume des zones d'intérêt, ou, en fonction des valeurs de seuil et des emplacements des pixels représentant une pluralité de lésions dans la zone du corps.
