A method and system are disclosed for dynamic wavelength allocation on a network link connected between network nodes, the link comprising one or more fibers, and having one or more data channel groups, each having at least one channel. The method comprises the steps of: exchanging bootstrap information between control units at each end of the link to determine the initial configuration of channels within bi-directional data channel and bi- directional control channel groups; negotiating, at the control units, the initial directionality of channels in the bi-directional channel groups; measuring traffic intensity on the link at a traffic measuring module at each link end to generate a link traffic signal; forwarding the link traffic signal to a channel control system; receiving at the control units information from neighbor nodes; processing the link traffic signal and neighbor node information; reallocating the directionality of one or more channels in the bi- directional data and control channel groups based on the processing results; and repeating the measuring, receiving, processing and reallocating steps continuously to control data and control channel group capacity in each direction along the link.
