METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLING PELVIC VISCERA VIA NEURO-ELECTRICAL STIMULATION ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is disclosed for controlling the function of a blad- der or bowel, including identification of selected nerve bundles con- trolling the separate function of the bladder or bowel and its associ- ated sphincter and the application of pulse trains to one or more electrodes positioned on the nerve bundles to control the functions thereof. Similar methods are used for modulating symptoms resulting from a loss of coordination between the normally synchronized func- tions of a bladder and/or bowel and their associated sphincters (Chart I). Similar methods are also used for treating incontinence by increasing sphincter tonus (Chart II). An electronic control system is also disclosed for transmiting electrical pulses to receivers adapted for implantation and connection to the electrodes. 1.
