Method for extinguishing a fire in a space, especially in a tunnel or equivalent, in which method an extinguishing medium is sprayed in the space by means of spraying heads. In a first stage of the method, the flow and temperature of the hot gases produced by the fire are influenced by spraying an extinguishing medium into the space, especially by creating in the space at least one curtain of extinguishing medium, and at least some spraying heads in the space are pre-activated into a state of readiness, and in a second stage at least one spraying head is activated to produce a spray of extinguishing medium. The invention also concerns an apparatus.

L'invention concerne un proc~d~ permettant d'~teindre un incendie dans un espace, notamment dans un tunnel ou similaire, selon lequel une substance d'extinction est pulv~ris~e dans l'espace concern~ au moyen de tÚtes de pulv~risation. Dans une premi­re ~tape du proc~d~, le flux et la temp~rature des gaz chauds produits par l'incendie sont influenc~s par pulv~risation d'une substance d'extinction dans ledit espace, en particulier pour cr~er dans cet espace au moins un rideau (7) de substance d'extinction. Au moins quelques tÚtes de pulv~risation (11, 12) situ~es dans ledit espace sont pr~activ~es pour Útre prÚtes ~ fonctionner et dans une seconde ~tape, au moins une tÚte de pulv~risation est activ~e pour produire un jet de substance d'extinction. L'invention concerne ~galement un dispositif appropri~.
