A replication process to provide fault tolerance for a streaming signal in a computer network. In one embodiment, the original or source signal is sent to several splitters which, in turn, each make copies of the signal and send the copies into a second layer of devices, which are referred to as "concentrators". A given concentrator receives as input one or more copies of the source signal. In a preferred embodiment, a given concentrator receives two copies of the source signal from at least two different splitters. The concentrators process the incoming streaming signal copies, for example, by merging them into a single or composite copy of the original source signal according to a given processing algorithm. The output of a given concentrator may then be fed into a splitter, with the process then being repeated if desired to make an arbitrary large number of copies of the signal. At the end of the replication process, the output of a splitter or a concentrator is fed directly or indirectly to an end user. The replication process is fault-tolerant, and thus the end user's signal is not interrupted regardless of signal or equipment problems within the distribution mechanism.
L'invention concerne un procédé de duplication fournissant une tolérance aux anomalies pour un signal continu dans un réseau d'ordinateurs. Selon un mode de réalisation de l'invention, le signal original ou source est envoyé à plusieurs répartiteurs qui, à leur tour, font chacun des copies de ce signal et envoient ces copies à une deuxième couche de dispositifs appelés </= concentrateurs >/= . Un concentrateur donné reçoit comme entrée une ou plusieurs copies du signal source. Selon un mode de réalisation préféré de l'invention, un concentrateur donné reçoit deux copies du signal source provenant d'au moins deux répartiteurs différents. Les concentrateurs traitent les copies de signal continu entrantes, par exemple, en les fusionnant en une copie unique ou composite du signal source original selon un algorithme de traitement donné. La sortie d'un concentrateur donné peut alors être transmise à un répartiteur, le procédé étant répété si désiré pour créer un grand nombre arbitraire de copies du signal. A la fin du procédé de duplication, la sortie d'un répartiteur ou d'un concentrateur est transmise directement ou indirectement à un utilisateur final. Le procédé de duplication selon l'invention tolère les anomalies et le signal de l'utilisateur final n'est donc pas interrompu, quels que soient les problèmes liés au signal ou au matériel survenant dans le mécanisme de distribution.
