When feeding cows with a fodder supply containing roughage and concentrate fodder, the cows are allowed to consume optional quantities of roughage, while the concentrate fodder is distributed to the cows in individual restricted quantities, the proper concentrate fodder ration administered to each cow being influenced by the actual roughage consumption of the cow. Ac- cording to the invention, the maximum roughage consumption of each cow is measured during an initial predetermined part of the lactation period of the cow, the concentrate fodder ration to be administered to the cow during the remaining pan of her lacta- tion period is determined in response to said maximum roughage consumption, and the determined concentrate fodder ration is fed to the cow during the remaining pan of her lactation period.
