The filtering of controlled pharmaceutical substance dispensing requests comprises a check into the system for conflicts with previously registered prescriptions, and confirmation of possible conflicts through the exchange of filter codes that designate no conflicts, drug interactions, overlapping dates for prescriptions, drug warnings, demographic profile checks, hold prescription requests, and other similar codes. In addition, the method and system allow dispensers override capability if the conflict is deemed unnecessary through professional judgment. Finally, the method and system provide notification of the prescription to the parties involved. The system comprises a communication device, preferably an interactive voice response-enabled phone or internet-enabled PDA, a communication network, preferably a PST, cellular, wireless or other voice or data network, a set of databases, preferably a relational or object database management system, and an agent device, preferably an IVR- or internet-based system.
