A string (12) of pocketed coil springs (14) is formed by inserting compressed springs between upper and lower plies of a folded, preferably thermally weldable fabric (16). The springs are maintained in a compressed configuration while a longitudinal seam (54) joins the free edges of the thermally welded fabric (16) together. Subsequently, the compressed springs (14) are allowed to relax into an expanded configuration after which a transverse seam (80) is formed in the fabric (16) between the adjacent springs (14) thereby encapsulating each spring (14) within a fabric pocket (86). The string (12) of pocketed coil springs (14) is advantageously formed without the need for reorienting the springs (14) after being inserted between the plies (24, 26) of the fabric (16) and thereby avoiding the disadvantages and complications associated with turning or reorienting the pocketed coil spring (14).

On forme une bande (12) de ressorts (14) hélicoïdaux ensachés en insérant des ressorts comprimés entre les couches supérieure et inférieure d'un tissu (16) replié, ce tissu étant de préférence thermosoudable. Les ressorts sont maintenus en position comprimée pendant l'assemblage des bords du tissu (16) thermosoudable au moyen d'une ligne (54) de soudure longitudinale. Ensuite on libère les ressorts (16) comprimés qui retrouvent leur position d'extension, puis on forme une ligne (80) de soudure transversale dans le tissu (16), entre les ressorts (14) adjacents, de sorte à encapsuler chaque ressort (14) dans une poche (86) de tissu. Ce procédé permet de former aisément une bande (12) de ressorts (14) hélicoïdaux ensachés sans qu'il soit nécessaire de réorienter les ressorts (14) après les avoir insérés entre les couches (24, 26) de tissu (16), ce qui permet d'éviter les inconvénients et les complications accompagnant le retournement et la réorientation des ressorts (14) hélicoïdaux ensachés.
