A method and system for displaying free-space, full color, high-resolution video or still images while simultaneously enabling the user to have real-time direct interaction with the visual images. The system comprises a self- generating means for creating a dynamic, non-solid particle cloud by ejecting atomized condensate present in the surrounding air, in a controlled fashion, into an invisible particle cloud. A projection system consisting of an image generating means and projection optics, projects an image onto the particle cloud. Any physical intrusion, occurring spatially within the image region, is captured by a detection system and the intrusion information is used to enable real-time user interaction in updating the image. This input/output (I/O) interface provides a display and computer link, permitting the user to select, translate and manipulate free-space floating visual information beyond the physical constraints of the device creating the image.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un système permettant d'afficher une vidéo ou des images fixes pleine couleur, à résolution élevée dans l'espace libre tout en permettant à un utilisateur d'avoir une interaction directe en temps réel avec des images visuelles. Le système consiste à générer automatiquement des moyens permettant de créer un nuage dynamique de particules non solides par éjection d'un condensat atomisé présent dans l'air ambiant, de manière contrôlée, sous forme de nuage de particules invisibles. Un système de projection, comprenant des moyens de génération d'image et une optique de projection, projette une image sur le nuage de particules. Toute intrusion physique, apparaissant spatialement dans la région d'image, est capturée par un système de détection et les informations d'intrusion sont utilisées pour permettre l'interaction d'un utilisateur en temps réel dans la mise à jour de l'image. Une interface d'entrées/sorties (E/S) fournit un affichage et une liaison informatique permettant à l'utilisateur de sélectionner, traduire et manipuler des informations visuelles flottant dans un espace libre au-delà des contraintes physiques du dispositif créant l'image.
