ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and a system for tracking the use of consumable items including a machine containing a supply of items, a memory and a program for ordering a selected item and means for entering data in the program to select the item to be dispensed. Means are also provided in the system for identifying the item dispensed and the user of the machine, and for generating an output of data for use in controlling the ordering, inventorying and tracking of the user of the dispensed consumable items. A printer can also be incorporated into the system for generating hard copy of the selected data in the machine memory or for creating current drawings or other documents needed by the machine user. Pneumatic matrix switching can be provided in the machine to control the pneumatic operation and dispensing of the selected item.
