A system for generating three-dimensional (3D) mosaics from a plurality of input images representing an imaged scene. The plurality input images contain at least two images of a single scene, where at least two of the images have overlapping regions. The system combines the images using a parallax-based approach that generates a 3D mosaic comprising an image mosaic representing a panoramic view of the scene and a shape mosaic representing the three- dimensional geometry of the scene. Specifically, in one embodiment, the system registers the input images along a parametric surface within the imaged scene and derives translation vectors useful in aligning the images into a two- dimensional image mosaic. Once registered, the system generates a shape mosaic representing objects within the scene.
Cette invention concerne un système qui permet de générer des mosaïques tridimensionnelles (3D) à partir d'une pluralité d'images de départ représentant une scène mise en image. La pluralité des images de départ comprend au moins deux images d'une même scène, deux au moins de ces images ayant des zones de recouvrement. Ledit système combine les images en utilisant une approche tenant compte de la parallaxe qui permet de produire une mosaïque 3D comportant d'une part une mosaïque d'image représentant une vue panoramique de la scène et d'autre part une mosaïque de forme représentant la géométrie tridimensionnelle de la scène. De manière spécifique, selon une réalisation, le système aligne les images de départ le long d'une surface paramétrique faisant partie de la scène mise en image et calcule des vecteurs de translation servant à aligner les images à l'intérieur d'une mosaïque d'image bidimensionnelle. Une fois l'alignement réalisé, le système génère une mosaïque de forme représentant des objets qui font partie de ladite scène.
