A hierarchically structured cellular network is disclosed. When an active mobile station requests a service that requires the use of a network resource not available in the cell handling the ongoing call (or, alternatively, during call set up), the network checks for cells on the higher levels to determine if the required resource is available. If the resource is available in a higher level cell, the call is handed over to that cell and the resource is allocated to the call. The call can be maintained in the higher level cell until the resource is no longer needed, or a "better" cell capable of providing the required resource is found.

L'invention concerne un réseau cellulaire hiérarchiquement structuré. Lorsqu'une station mobile active demande un service qui exige -'utilisation d'une ressource du réseau non disponible dans la cellule traitant l'appel en cours (ou bien selon une variante, pendant l'établissement d'un appel), le réseau recherche des cellules à des niveaux plus élevés afin de déterminer si la ressource requise est disponible. Si la ressource est disponible dans une cellule de niveau plus élevé, l'appel est transmis à cette cellule et la ressource est attribuée à l'appel. L'appel peut être maintenu dans la cellule de niveau plus élevé jusqu'à ce que la ressource ne soit plus demandée, ou qu'une cellule plus apte à fournir la ressource requise soit trouvée.
