ABSTRACT This invention relates to methods for the mechanical drying of raw peat. Peat, in its naturally occurring state, contains about 90 per cent water, by weight. Thermal drying of raw peat is inefficient and several methods are being developed to facilitate mechanical dewatering of peat. It is well known that the natural fibres of peat are quickly destroyed by mining, conveying or by slurry pumping, and thereafter raw peat can be dewatered mechanically only to a maximum of 30 - 35 % solids, by weight, using existing technology. In order to increase the efficiency of any mechanical devices, recoverable synthetic fibres have been added to the raw peat. As a result, raw peat can be dewatered mechanically up to 45 per cent by commercially available pressure devices. From 45 per cent, raw peat can be thermally dried up to 90 per cent, and can be used as a high grade fuel with a thermal value of 8,000 to 10,000 Btu/lb.
