A system monitors growth characteristics of a plant having a root buried in a prescribed volume of ground using a plurality of electrodes inserted into the ground at a known spacing relative to one another in proximity to the root or root-like structure. When electrical current is applied to some of the electrodes, electrical potential is measured at other ones of the electrodes to construct a representation of electrical impedance across the prescribed volume locating the root or root-like structure. Growth characteristics of the soil and the plant, for example root size, root shape, soil moisture content, and the like, can be identified by locating variations of the electrical impedance.
L'invention concerne un système surveillant des caractéristiques de croissance d'une plante dont une racine est enterrée dans un volume prescrit de terre à l'aide d'une pluralité d'électrodes introduites dans la terre à un espacement connu l'une par rapport à l'autre à proximité de la racine ou de la structure analogue à une racine. Lorsque du courant électrique est appliqué à certaines électrodes, un potentiel électrique est mesuré au niveau des autres électrodes pour construire une représentation d'impédance électrique à travers le volume prescrit localisant la racine ou la structure analogue à une racine. Des caractéristiques de croissance du sol et de la plante, par exemple la taille de la racine, la forme de la racine, le contenu en humidité du sol, et similaires, peuvent être identifiées par la localisation de variations de l'impédance électrique.
