A method of modelling a system comprising a plurality of components related one to another comprises the step of storing in an information field of a database a plurality of Information Elements including a first group of System Elements each comprising information about a respective one of the components, and a group of Relationship Elements each comprising information about one or more relationships between the components. Qualifiers that describe and categorize the information contained within each Information Element may also be stored, and assigned to the appropriate Information Elements. One or more of the Information Elements may have a plurality of qualifiers assigned thereto. The qualifiers may include at least one type of qualifier that is permanently assigned to label Information Elements containing specific types of information. For example, an Informational Element Type of "Annual Sales" could be assigned permanently to all Information Elements containing annual sales information.
