Method and system for out-of-band (OOB) messaging with customer premises equipment (CPE) (22) configured to receive OOB messaging signals from a cable modem termination system (CMTS) (42). The method and system include determining whether a downstream channel descriptor (DCD) message identifying data tunnels include a DCD message identifier matching with a CPE identifier such that the data tunnels identified in the matching DCD message are tuned to by the CPE (22).
