A method and system of physical access control by a key owner to a door controlled by a door controller is disclosed. The key owner is assigned a key which is identified by the door. The door transmits this identification to a remote computer network which then returns a message on whether the key is authorized based on security settings controlled by the door controller. The door then either grants or denies access based on the message.
