A method for improving modal bandwidth in computer networks using multimode optical fiber and laser sources is disclosed in which an annular beam is generated by the laser source, thus preventing center fiber transmission modes from reaching the detector. This prevents or lessens a pulse-splitting effect at the detector. The annular beam is generated by configuring a vertical cavity surface emitting laser to have a center totally-reflecting block of 5-7 microns to generate a substantially dark-centered beam.

La présente invention concerne un procédé permettant d'améliorer la largeur de bande modale dans des réseaux informatiques faisant appel à des fibres optiques multimode et à des sources laser. Dans la présente invention, la source laser génère un rayon annulaire, ce qui empêche les modes de transmission passant par le centre des fibres d'atteindre le détecteur et permet par conséquent d'éviter ou de réduire l'effet de division d'impulsions sur le détecteur. On obtient un rayon annulaire en configurant un laser à cavité verticale et à émission par la surface de manière qu'il présente un bloc central de réflexion totale de 5 à 7 microns permettant de générer un rayon sensiblement centré dans le foncé.
