A system and method of permitting a customer to obtain a secure single-use or limited-use debit card for a predetermined amount and for a particular purpose. In virtual form, the customer purchases a prepaid debit card number with a customer-specified available funds' limit and expiry date. Optionally, the customer chooses to add his own name and address in these respective fields of the prepaid debit card or have an alphanumeric string attributed to him for these fields by the system allowing for greater privacy. Prepaid debit cards will also be available in pre-set denominations and currencies with limited term or customer- specified expiration dates. A prepaid debit card transaction system is also provided. A prepaid debit card transaction system allows the issuing institutions to verify the security features that exist by establishing that the information that is available on the face of a prepaid debit card (number and expiration date) correlates with the address, name or other data elements that have been given or attributed to the customer.
