A method and apparatus for communicating geographic specific services to a receiver (4) in a satellite communications network by utilizing location identification information included in a composite signal transmitted by a terrestrial repeater (3). A terrestrial repeater receives from a satellite a composite signal comprising a plurality of time-division multiplexed (TDM) data channels and retransmits the composite signal with a unique transmitter identification number which indicates the identity of the repeater (21). Upon reception of the composite signal from the terrestrial repeater, the receiver determines the current geographical location of the receiver based on the transmitter identification number (24). The receiver then compares the current location of the receiver to header information carried in the data channels to select information in the data channels targeted to the geographical location of the receiver (25). The receiver then provides the selected information to a user of the receiver so that user may access services directed to audiences in the geographic location of the receiver (26).
L'invention concerne un procédé et un système utilisables pour la fourniture de services géographiques spécifiques à un récepteur (4), dans un réseau de télécommunications par satellite: en l'occurrence, on utilise l'information de localisation d'emplacement véhiculée par un signal composite que transmet un répéteur terrestre (3). Le répéteur en question reçoit par satellite ledit signal composite, établi sur plusieurs voies de données à multiplexage temporel, et il retransmet ce signal avec un numéro d'identification d'émetteur unique fournissant l'identité du répéteur (21). A la réception du signal composite depuis le répéteur terrestre, le récepteur détermine l'emplacement géographique courant du récepteur sur la base du numéro d'identification de l'émetteur (24). Ensuite, le récepteur compare l'emplacement courant du récepteur et l'information d'en-tête acheminée dans les voies de données pour sélectionner l'information dans les voies de données correspondant à l'emplacement géographique du récepteur (25), moyennant quoi le récepteur fournit l'information sélectionnée à un utilisateur du récepteur. L'utilisateur peut alors accéder aux services destinés au public à l'emplacement géographique du récepteur (26).
