A method for purifying water containing various contaminants is provided. The method comprises exposing a microporous trapping medium having internal surfaces which bear active, hydrated hydroxyl groups thereon to a volume of flowing water containing colloids and the contaminant entrained therein, thereby allowing said hydrated hydroxyl groups to immobilize said colloids on said surfaces to progressively accumulate a coating of colloids as a gel through the release of hydronium/hydrogen ions, thus removing the contaminant from the water. A corresponding system for purifying water and a trapping medium are also provided.
