A system and method for scheduling data packets in a telecommunications network whereby the data packets are received and stored in a first buffer means (16) at a node (2) in the network, the packets being representative of one or more sessions. The system further includes a second buffer means (18) to which data packets are buffered on initiation of a trigger condition to avoid overflow in the first buffer means (16) during a congestion period. A packet switch in the network incorporating the system and method is also described.
