An electromagnetic method for sensing and/or locating a person forming a non-co-operative target, wherein an electromagnetic signal is transmitted (1) in a search area (N) and the backscatter signal from the area (N) is detected (2). The method is characterised in that transmission and reception are carried out using at least two separate antennas, the resulting signal(s) is (are) filtered with a low-pass or band-pass filter (12) to extract components that are indicative of human motion, and the resulting filtered signal(s) is (are) processed to determine the presence and/or location of the person. A system for carrying out the method is also provided. Said method and system are useful for locating avalanche victims.

Procédé électromagnétique pour la détection et/ou la localisation d'un individu, constituant une cible non coopérative, dans lequel on émet (1) au voisinage d'une zone de recherche (N) un signal électromagnétique et on détecte (2) au voisinage de ladite zone (N) le signal rétrodiffusé par celle- ci, caractérisé en ce que l'émission et la réception sont réalisées au moyen d'au moins deux antennes distinctes, en ce qu'on filtre le (ou les) signal(aux) ainsi obtenu(s) par un filtre passe-bas ou passe bande (12) de façon à en extraire les composantes qui correspondent à un mouvement humain, et en ce qu'on traite (14) le (ou les) signal(aux) filtré(s) ainsi obtenu(s) pour en déduire la présence d'un individu et/ou le localiser. Le système permet de mettre en oeuvre ce procédé. Application à la localisation de victimes d'avalanches.
