The present invention relates generally to computers and communications, and more specifically, to a method and system for translating communication requests from a numeric keypad on a computer, telephone, or cellular telephone. For example, one may use the numeric keypad on a cellular telephone to identify an Internet URL (uniform resource locator) address which consists of alpha characters. This is done using a server which performs the following steps: receiving a sequence of numbers transmitted from a remote user; indexing a local database using the sequence of numbers to identify a predetermined corresponding selection; and transmitting the identified selection back to the remote user.
