Rapidly advancing hardware technology has been fueling a steady increase in software complexity. Not only are programs becoming larger but more complex and intricate interdependencies are being formed between software objects. Given that multiple processes or threads can act within an application, software understanding and debugging can become extremely difficult. This thesis explores the use of 3D visualization to simulate the execution of a program within the context of its structure, for the purposes of training and debugging. In order. to intuitively visualize software execution in 3D, a 3D model of executing software has been implemented. This model uses NestedVision3D, a software structure visualization tool, to display the source code's static structure. A novel concept called the snake has been developed to superimpose software execution onto NestedVision3D graphs. The software execution is time sequenced against a running clock; therefore all three dimensions can be used for simulation, none having to represent time. Animations are derived from execution traces collected from various sources.
