S P E C I F I C A T I O N Title: METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR WELL VELOCITY SHOOTING AND VERTICAL SEISMIC PROFILING Inventor: PAUL CHELMINSKI ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Method and system are provided for well velocity shooting and vertical seismic profiling utilizing mobile seismic land sources for transmitting powerful seismic energy impulses into the earth. A plurality of nesting pairs of tanks are transported on a single vehicle to a well site where the tanks are unloaded and arranged in a suitable array, for example, in a linear array or uniformly spaced around the mouth of the well. The tanks or containers each have a displaceable end portion serving as a diaphragm which is placed in contact with the ground near the well, and then the tanks are filled with a noncompressible liquid, usually water, at the well site. The total effective mass of the liquid may be increased by adding density-increasing materials thereto for example "drilling mud". Air guns are suspended in the tanks submerged in the liquid there in. The air guns are fired in a predetermined manner, abruptly releasing pressurized gas into the liquid contained in the tanks for providing powerful seismic impulses, i.e. vibrational waves, which are transmitted into the ground by the displaceable diaphragms. Geophone equipment which has been lowered into the well receives the resultant waves after they have passed through the geological structures near the well and have been reflected and/or refracted or otherwise affected by such structures,and the signals from the geophone equipment may be recorded for later analysis and/or processed at ground level, with the objective to determine the earth structures and possible oil -1- or gas bearing regions near the well. Advantageously, a mobile system is provided in which a single vehicle can provide an array of four seismic sources positioned near the mouth of a well instead of requiring four vehicles by virtue of providing nesting pairs of tanks which can be set up at the well site with airguns fired therein, thus providing a very effective and convenient method of obtaining powerful seismic signals for deep penetration into the earth. Moreover, nesting trios or a larger multiplicity of nesting containers can advantageously be provided for greatly increasing the vehicle capacity in terms of seismic sources per vehicle. -2-
