This method and system allow a subscriber to a cable television service to receive a listing or menu of programming available for that subscriber's set- top terminal to upgrade or enhance the features available over the cable system. A Directory of Services (DoS) message is transmitted to over the cable system to the subscriber's set-top terminal. The terminal can then display for the subscriber the menu of programming available. This display may include a price for downloading each programming object. The subscriber can then, using a remote control unit or a user input device on the terminal, direct the set- top terminal to acquire a listed programming object. The DoS message will provide information enabling the set-top terminal to download the indicated programming object from the cable system in response to the subscriber's input. The subscriber can then have intermediate access to upgraded or enhanced programming, the purchase of which is billed to the subscriber's account.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un système permettant à un abonné d'un service de télédiffusion par câble de recevoir une liste ou un menu des programmations disponibles pour le terminal de décodage de l'abonné, afin de mettre à jour ou de perfectionner les caractéristiques disponibles sur le système de télédiffusion par câble. Un message de l'annuaire des services (DoS) est transmis sur le système de télédiffusion par câble au terminal de décodage de l'abonné. Le terminal peut alors afficher le menu des programmations disponibles pour l'abonné. Cet affichage peut comprendre le prix de téléchargement de chaque objet de programmation. L'abonné peut alors, à l'aide d'une unité de commande à distance ou d'un dispositif d'entrée d'utilisateur, diriger le terminal de décodage pour acquérir un objet de programmation. Le message DoS fournit des informations permettant au terminal de décodage de télécharger l'objet de programmation indiqué du système de télédiffusion par câble en réponse à l'entrée de l'abonné. L'abonné peut alors accéder immédiatement à une programmation mise à jour ou perfectionnée, cet achat étant facturé sur le compte de l'abonné.
