A method and computer program product of limiting sand use in a railroad locomotive sanding system applying sand to railroad rails including a plurality of sand applicators for directing sand flow toward the rail. The method and computer program product may include steps of automatically controlling a flow of sand to limit the application of sand to situations in which applying sand to the rail would be effective to increase the adhesion of at least one of the railroad locomotive wheels on the rail by a predetermined incremental amount. The operation of each of the plurality of sand applicators may be independently controlled for selectively operating those sand applicators whose operation will result in at least the predetermined incremental increase in adhesion of the locomotive wheels on the rail, while not operating the other sand applicators so as to limit the amount of sand applied to the track.

La présente invention se rapporte à un procédé et à un produit programme informatique permettant de limiter l'utilisation de sable dans un système de sablage de chemin de fer par locomotive, lequel est destiné à appliquer du sable sur des rails de chemin de fer, et comprend une pluralité d'applicateurs de sable pour chaque rail, qui dirigent le flux de sable vers le rail. Le procédé selon l'invention peut comprendre l'étape consistant à réguler automatiquement le flux de sable, afin de limiter l'application de sable aux situations dans lesquelles ladite application permet d'augmenter l'adhérence sur le rail d'au moins l'une des roues de la locomotive d'une quantité incrémentielle prédéterminée. Il est possible de commander indépendamment le fonctionnement de chacun de la pluralité d'applicateurs de sable, afin de faire fonctionner sélectivement ceux dont le fonctionnement permettra au moins ladite augmentation incrémentielle prédéterminée de l'adhérence des roues de la locomotive sur le rail, et de ne pas faire fonctionner les autres applicateurs de sable de façon à limiter la quantité de sable appliquée sur la voie.
