Microbial growth on surfaces of structures is inhibited without the use of toxic substances by a composition including a rock flour having a catalyst precipitated on or bound to it, the catalyst being manganous oxide or finely divided palladium or ruthenium. Various types of catalyst treated rock flour may be used, preferably mixed in a resinous emulsion for application as a paint, varnish or dressing to the surfaces to be treated, or incorporated into the material from which the structure is formed.
