ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Disclosed herein are: (1) a method for calcining and activating the infusiblized spherical pitch beadsin a furnace provided with (i) a first-stage fluidized bed wherein the infulidized spherical pitch beads, which have been prepared by the steps of molding a petroleum pitch, a coal pitch or a mixture thereof into a spherical form and infusibilizing the molded beads, are calcined at a temperature of 600 to 800°C to be the spherical carbon beads and (ii) a second-stage fluidized bed wherein the obtained spherical carbon beads are activated at a temperature of 800 to 1,200°C, and (2) a method comprising the steps of (i) mixing 100 parts by weight of a petroleum pitch, a coal pitch or a mixture thereof and 5 to 50 parts by weight of a viscosity- adjusting agent selected from the group consisting of bicyclic and tricyclic aromatic compounds and mixtures thereof, (ii) molding the obtained mixture into the spherical beads, (iii) extracting and removing the viscosity-adjusting agentfrom the beads, (iv) infusibilizing the beads by air or other oxidants at a temperature of not higher than 400°C to obtain the infusibilized spherical pitch beads and (v) calcining and activating the obtained, infusibilized spherical pitch beads in the two-stage fluidized bed furnace which is mentioned in (1) above. - 22 -
